I returned to China for design education in Cheung Kong School of Art & Design (CKAD), Shantou University in 2007. This studio design was my first project in CKAD. It used to be drawing room and then a warehouse before it turned into what it is now. My design brought a new life to this place, not only as a studio, but also meeting rooms and display rooms. In order to make the best use of this room, I designed all furniture in it and made them also parts of the display for product design education.
This space now serves for 6 functions, brain storming room, design studio, computer room, model production, model display and mini photo studio. One of the limitations of this space --- small size of the only gate, as 95 x 210cm, forced me into design a series of plug-in furniture, such as computer desk, drawing table, modeling table, conference table, model display shelf, bookshelf, high chair and cabinet, etc.
This whole series applied my favorite combination of wood and stainless steel. Abrasions resistant of wood and stable of stainless steel are accord with my high requirement on quality concern. With my assistant designer and after modeling and tests, I minimized the modeling table into 24 components (12 as principal and 12 as supplementary) and the conference table into 14 components (10 as principal and 4 as supplementary)
All of these designed were produced in handcraft workshops in Shantou. But the short of subsequent services forced my assistant to bring all products back by bus and only packed by cardboards.
Different unexpected difficulties in Shantou, most of all I should say, from the complicated relationship and conservative systems, motive me in pursuing original design.
